My prediction on what will happen if Stephen Harper is elected as Prime Minister of Canada:
Once elected, likely with a strong majority if the current numbers are correct, the Conservatives will discover that the Canadian economy isn’t as picturesque as they claim. They probably hire an outside firm to audit the books and a short time later will declare that the Liberals manipulated the numbers, that the surplus isn’t as big as once thought. What’ll happen next?No money for child care and cuts to social programs. Tax cuts will carry forward since they benefit the wealthy, particularly the reduction in the GST. Fiscal imbalance? There’s no money to fix that…and besides, I think that particular problem is far more complicated than Harper is willing to reveal. For those who wish to vote Conservative because they think that the Liberals have been in power for too long…well, I don’t think that’s a valid reason.Remember Mike harris and the mess in Ontario after his tenure? How about the last Conservative government under Brian Mulroney?
Here’s another beef I have with Harper:
The Conservative Party’s website states that they have “A belief in the equality of all Canadians.”Then why on Earth would they be willing to hold a free vote on same-sex marriage if he’s elected?Supreme Court of Canada ruled that Ottawa has exclusive jurisdiction to decide who has the right to get married and shortly after the bill was passed.A prime minister who gives himself power over the Supreme court and legitimate legislative decisions, in my opinion, is a threat to our constitution and our civil rights.Isn’t this all very similar to Bush’s justification for the surveillance of American citizens?
